Killer Squirrel Remains in San Carlos

The interclub tournament against Mountain View TC was held on Saturday, Sept 14.  MVTC did an excellent job of hosting, and a good time was had by all players from both clubs.

Final score: SCTC 196 and MVTC 112.  So, the trophy Killer Squirrel stays in San Carlos for yet another season!

-Successful Clean-Up Day at Arguello

We held a "clean-up" for the tennis courts adjacent to Arguello Park and accomplished a great deal.  First, a special thanks to the following folks for helping out on Saturday, September 7: Brian Best, John Farcich, Janet Adams, Lynn McGhee, Ray Choye, Dario Ditrapani, and Daniel Arakaki 's Dad.

The biggest job was a large broken branch next to court #2.  Brian Best, armed with a chain saw, hacked off this menacing branch. All brush was trimmed away next to all courts, wind shields around court 3 were secured, sheds were cleaned and tidied up, grill was cleaned, trash cans were placed on all 4 courts (let's hope theyhave not yet been stolen), trash was picked up, and large items have been placed in a pile to be hauled to the dump.

Add to these accomplishments, Jack Hesotian managed the replacement of older halogen light bulbs a few months ago. You noticed the courts were better lit, right?

Stay tuned for the next chance for YOU to contribute your efforts! Anyone a good painter? The benches could use your expertise.

Many thanks to our revered club Prez, John Yarley, for organizing and working this essential event.

-Twilight Tennis

We had a great event at Arguello with almost a full moon and some fun tennis. Of the twelve players that participated, we had some very close matches. The highlight of the evening was Yan's  Garden where we ordered 14 different dishes from chow main to walnut shrimp and had a real feast family style.  John Yarley did a great job setting things up and getting more participation.

The weather was a perfect 75 degrees with a gorgeous full moon and fun tennis. Look for more of these Twilights in the future!

-USTA Results: Age is just a number…

Four 55+ teams represented SCTC in the Sectionals, September 20-22. The young teams had a great season:

Vicky Leong, captain, 8.0 women’s (9-1) and Steve Carr, captain, 8.0 men’s (9-1) heading to Johnson Ranch, Roseville. Tami Adachi, captain, 6.0 women’s (7-1) and John Geer, captain, 6.0 men’s (7-3), heading to Laguna Creek, Elk Grove.

FLASH NEWS: John Geer's M6.0 came THIS close to going to Nationals. "Friday 8am we took to the courts against Walnut Creek, the toughest team around. Bob & Marshall won, Bill & James had a very close match, John G & John Y got badly beat. Loss 2-1

Next at 10:30 vs. Diamond Hills: Andy drives all the way to Elk Grove for one match. THANK YOU, Andy!  Bob & Marshall win, John and John lose a close match, James and Andy go 2.5 hours to a super tiebreaker, James bombs in two first-serve winners and they WIN 2-1. Team Victory!

Sat at 4:00 vs.Napa.We are short ONE PLAYER so we default one match. Bob & John G clobber D1 6-2, 6-1; Marshall & Bill dominate 6-3, 6-1. So, 2-1 team victory.

Result: a 3 way tie for 1st place. all clubs with 2-1 record. Based on number of individual matches, we were eliminated.  The ultimate winner was decided by number of games lost; the difference was only 2 games."

And the moral of the story is: Put the playoff, district, and sectional dates on your calendars NOW for the current season.

-Fun Day Photos

A good time was had by lots of tennis players on Labor Day.  The weather was hot enough that it felt good to rotate off the courts and take a break. A delicious BBQ lunch was grilled by John and John, and our third John took photos.  Evidence of good times and some good service technique is here.  Proceeds of registration fees and from the raffle went to CORA, a community group that helps families and women.
