Tennis: a Game of Timing  by John Geer

Nick Bollitterri breaks players into levels based on how they react to the ball. Think about which category fits you.

  1. The lower intermediate reacts to the ball after it hits the ground.

  2. The solid intermediate reacts when the ball crosses the net.

  3. An advanced player reacts to the ball coming off the opponents racket.

  4. The top player can anticipate with accuracy what type of a ball will cross the net and where it is likely to go based on the racket face, level of contact and the opponents body position.

If you concentrate on your opponent hitting the ball, you will be surprised how much more time you have to make a great shot. These reactions are HABITS and can be improved.

When you hit the ball, move immediately to cover the court in anticipation of the return.

When your opponent hits the ball, say to yourself Forehand (or backhand) and immediately setup for the shot. Now that you are in the setup position, all you need to do is hit the ball. With the extra time you can concentrate on placing the ball. By setting up early, you are now waiting for the ball and not racing to it and you now have more time to make a great shot.

Setup means your racket is back ready to swing at the ball, like pulling the string on a bow back before shooting the arrow.

Taking the ball out of the air gives opponents less time to react, especially on lobs. If you lob, come into mid court to attack but also ready to return another lob.

When you take over the net, you are on offense. When you are moving back you are on defense. It's very hard to make points when you're on defense, as your opponents now have more time. Worst: one up and one back: now you have one player on defense and one on offense and a big hole in the center.  More tips next time...
